This site will help you find your way around the internet, particularly if you are just getting started.

We'll provide you with the general information you need to navigate the internet and have a really enjoyable experience, no matter what your interests. So thanks for stopping, come back often. You can start by clicking Favorites, or Bookmarks in your browser's menu, and add this page. That way you can choose a direct link to it every time.

WARNING: Since you are new to the Internet, do not give out any personal information. By that I simply mean, don't enter your name, your email address ( except to friends ), your credit card number*, your checking account, your social security number, your address, don't even give out your dog's name for right now. Once you get more acquainted, you'll become more familiar with the do's and don'ts.

* You may have had to give your credit card number to your Internet Service Provider, like AOL, Comcast, PeoplePC, Charter, Verizon, or whoever is giving you the access to the internet. But you shouldn't have to give it out again.

Search engines are a great place to find what you're looking for. They don't always nail it on the head, but they are pretty good. Try it by visiting;

http://www.msn.com
http://www.google.com
http://www.yahoo.com
http://www.aol.com

Of course, the latest craze is http://www.myspace.com. There you can build your own web pages and communicate with others online. I would suggest holding off on that until you are comfortable in finding your way around. But it won't take long.

Blogging is the other big topic. This is something you should definately do. I use

http://www.blogger.com/

Google runs this site. They actually bought www.blogspot.com I think. It's really just you writing and commenting on just about anything.

First things First, the software your running right now right now is called a Browser. There are several popular browsers.

Microsoft Internet Explorer. Frequently referred to as IE. Hopefully you are using IE 6 or 7, the most secure browser from Microsoft. I would suggest moving up to IE 7, you can get it by clicking here to download it. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/Search.aspx?displaylang=en.

Netscape Navigator. Another popular browser, free to download from Netscape.com. I think 6 or 7 is the current version.

Firefox is the other really good browser. Downloadable at http://www.mozilla.org/ ,Has tabbed user interface and is very easy to use.

Other browsers are provided by AOL, and other companies. Fundementally speaking, they all do the same thing.

You'll notice when you move the mouse pointer over the blue text above, a little hand with 1 finger pointing up indicates that the text is a link. Which means while pointing at it you can click, usually left click and your browser will take to that page or site and display it in your browser.

If you look in the Address bar right now, it should say http://www.usualstuff.com/ or just http://usualstuff.com. That's the address of this site. You may notice that the www. isn't there, that's how the OfficeLive team decided to implement these sites, they are our host. A host is basically a computer known as a server on the internet that you can visit.  If you type http://www.usualstuff.com/ it will still take you to our site.

Get used to it. Click a few of these links, then after the page loads, hit the BACK button, usually and arrow pointing left in the top line of buttons on your browser. Back simply means, take me back to where I was.

Try it.

http://www.yahoo.com/ -  A major search engine and portal

http://www.google.com/     - Another major portal with search

http://www.creditcardlanding.com/  - A site that markets major credit cards

http://www.ruschentertainment.com/
 - A site that offers entertainment services

These sites give you some variety about what is out there, but it is just the start. Once you are comfortable moving around, and getting back to where you were, we'll move on to Search Engines.

Believe me, you can become proficient rather quickly.

Terminology

Internet = Think of a bunch of computers ( servers ) all around the world. These computers are all "connected" together and form a giant, ever expanding network.

World Wide Web = WWW for short, is really information in the form of pages, or documents, that are made accessible to you through something called Hyperlinks. Hyperlinks are the things you click on with your mouse.

Browser = The software you run to view pages over the internet that are hosted on the servers mentioned above. They can be pages of information covering just about any topic you can think of.

URLs or Addresses = http://www.microsoft.com/ is the address of the Microsoft web site. Most addresses begin with the www, though they do not have to.

The buttons across the top of your browser help you to navigate the internet, or to go from page to page, backward and forward.

This is just the beginning, with a little practice, you will surfing the net with the best of them.
